Delta Heavy Unveil 'Event Horizon'

Updated: Feb 14, 2019

Duo group Delta Heavy have been in the electronic dance music scene since 2003, performing at nightclubs, concerts, and festivals all around the world. While this creative, intensive, and multi-textured duo has primarily made drum & bass, they have also made genres, such as dubstep, trapstep, deep house, and festival trap. Most of their music has been influenced by science fiction films and film score styles of music.

Three months ago, they released their first debut album, Paradise Lost. Today, I will be taking an in-depth look at their track 'Event Horizon,' which is no exception to their inspirations.

Listening to 'Event Horizon,' the song starts with a few quick keyboard notes paired with various percussion instruments in the background, followed by keyboard synths and hints of bass coming through with a distinct horn thrust.

Then listeners can begin hearing sampled lines from classic movie The Black Hole "Tonight, my friends, we stand on the brink of a feat unparalleled in space exploration. If the data on my returning probe ship matches my computerized calculations, I will travel where no man has dared to go...Into the black hole?"

At this point, the keyboard becomes more aggressive, distinct, and melodic. The beat begins picking up with a drum and snare sound that foreshadows the drum & bass coming ahead. The bass now becomes more melodic, heavier, sub bass comes in, synths appear, and then the bass drops.

There are two powerful drops with an intermission between them in this piece. These drops are similar, but very powerful. This is Delta Heavy's signature sound coming through. This duo group fuses heavy bass with a strong drum and bass beat that hints at drumstep. These drops provide an atmosphere that will make any listener want to dance, mosh, head bang, or at least jump.

As a fairly fast paced drum & bass track, 'Event Horizon,' reminds people why they love drum & bass and at the same time draws in new audiences. As a bigger fan of dubstep, the moment I heard Delta Heavy for the first time, I was blown away. These guys certainly go hard and are very talented. Their sense of style, their influences, and their intent for their music is all there and apparent. Many times throughout this song I thought of the Star Wars Death Star alarm and was reminded of epic science fiction video games.

After this and the rest of their outstanding debut album, I think the EDM community will be waiting for Delta Heavy's next big and meaningful production.
